Storyline:

On the Atlantic coast of Ireland, in County Sligo, Marianne and Connell attended high school. Later, they attended Trinity College Dublin as undergraduates. The complicated connection between Connell and Marianne is mostly the focus. Marianne is considered an outcast by her secondary school classmates, despite the fact that she disdains concern for social position. Despite her academic success, her disdainful mother Denise and resentful brother Alan hamper her home life.

Though her family avoids mentioning him, it is revealed that her father, who is now gone, was a domestic abuser. Connell is a bright, athletic kid who lives with his single mother, Lorraine, who works as a cleaner for Denise. He is well-liked in the school, but his standing is hurt by his silence during Marianne's bullying. As their connection progresses, this leads to complication.
